How to Use an AeroPress

The current upright method, measured plainly and without flipping hot coffee over your hand.

Kept current · last checked Sep 2026

The short answer

Use it upright: start with 16–18 grams of medium-fine coffee and 185 °F / 85 °C water, stir, steep briefly and press gently. Skip the inverted method; the manufacturer warns that it is less stable and can cause burns.

Put a rinsed paper filter in the cap, lock it onto the chamber, and place the chamber upright on a sturdy mug. Add coffee, add water, stir, insert the plunger just far enough to make a seal, steep, then press gently. That is an AeroPress. The internet has added capes and orchestral music, but the brewer remains cheerfully simple.

The upright method

  1. Prepare the filter. Put it in the cap and rinse it over the sink. Lock the cap onto the chamber.
  2. Choose a steady mug. Set the chamber on a mug that is broad and strong enough for gentle downward pressure.
  3. Add 17 grams of coffee. That sits in the middle of the maker’s current 16–18 gram range. Start around medium-fine. Level the bed so the water reaches it evenly.
  4. Add 220 grams of water at 185°F / 85°C. Stir just enough to wet all the grounds.
  5. Seal and steep. Insert the plunger a short distance to slow dripping. Wait one minute.
  6. Press slowly. Use steady, gentle pressure for about 30 seconds. Stop when you hear the hiss.

Adjust one thing

If the cup is thin or sharp, try a slightly finer grind. If it is harsh, drying, or difficult to press, try slightly coarser. Keep the dose, water, and time still while you learn what the grind changed. The grind-size chart can get you into the right neighbourhood.

Pressing hard is not a flavour technique. If the brewer resists, stop and check that the filter and cap are seated correctly, then ease off. Keep your face and hands clear of the chamber while it contains hot water.

Cleanup is the encore

Remove the cap after the brewer has cooled enough to handle, push the puck into compost or trash, and rinse the seal and chamber. Follow the cleaning guidance for your exact model. For the long version, see our coffee-gear cleaning guide.

The machine’s origin story is still a lovely one. Our 2014 Alan Adler interview remains in the archive, clearly dated and wearing its years honestly.
