No steamer? No problem. Here are four ways to get that foamy coffee you crave, using things already in your kitchen.
Brewing at home is more rewarding anyway. You pick the method, you pick the beans, you know how fresh they are, and you drink it without putting trousers on.
Except for one thing. You do not have a La Marzocco. And what people actually miss from a café is rarely the perfectly pulled shot — it is the steam wand, and the foamy milk it makes.
You do not need one. There are four cheap ways to get most of the way there, and we have tested all of them badly.
One · the jar shake
A jar, a lid, a microwave. Fill the jar with the milk you want, screw the lid on, and shake hard for a good thirty seconds until the volume has roughly doubled. Take the lid off — this matters — and microwave for thirty seconds. Pour the milk in, holding the foam back with a spoon, then spoon the foam on top.
Two · the French press pump
If you own a press, this is the best of the four. Pour the milk in and pump the plunger for about thirty seconds. You will see it climb. Then remove the plunger and heat. Or heat first and pump after — both work, and the second is slightly tidier.
Three · the old-school stovetop
An immersion blender with a whisk attachment, or just a whisk. Heat the milk in a pan and whisk while it warms. Do not let it get too hot — scalded milk tastes of scalded milk and no amount of foam rescues it.
Four · the blender
One of those small bullet-type blenders is ideal for the quantity involved. Blend, transfer, heat, pour. A full-size blender works too but you will spend longer washing it than drinking.
So there you have it. Fresh beans, a brewer you already own, and about ninety seconds of effort stands between you and the drink you have been paying six dollars for.
